STORY

It was a chilly afternoon in Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside of Estes Park, CO when my younger brother and I ventured to hike up to Mount Bierstadt Lake.  It was a brisk climb, but we stopped here and there along the way to take some quick portraits.  As we neared the top - our hike only briefly interrupted by a dashing, snow-white ermine - the clouds began to set in low and deep.  We descended into the woods on the other side of the ridge where the snow, though well marked, was deeper.  Looking ahead I was attracted by the parting of the pines, with their dark, rough skin as they reached up toward the sky. The snow caught in their limbs was briefly lit by the quickly diminishing sun, creating a reverse echo of the dark snow-laden forest floor below.
